Wailing With Lou is an appropriate title for this enjoyable set of straight-ahead bop. Whether he’s riding the propulsive rhythms of “Caravan” or settling down into a ballad, Donaldson takes the center stage with his surprisingly full alto tone. He still displays a clear Charlie Parker influence, but he is beginning to break free and develop his own style. In particular, he relies on bluesy runs more than Bird, which give his music a soulful edge. But what makes Wailing With Lou so enjoyable is the hot interplay between Donaldson, trumpeter Donald Byrd, pianist Herman Foster, bassist Peck Morrison and drummer Art Taylor. All five musicians give enthusiastic, infectious performances. There’s nothing out of the ordinary here — just hard-driving bop and sensitive ballads, which are sure to please fans of the style. AMG

Cuban Buena Vista Social Club Bassist “Cachaito” Lopez Dies
HAVANA—Cuban double-bassist Orlando “Cachaito” Lopez, a member of the Buena Vista Social Club, died in Havana, a family member told Efe. He was 76.
“He was ill for more than a month and a half. First he was operated for a hernia and then the prostate, but complications set in, he had kidney failure and died,” his sister-in-law, Rosa Garcia Maden, said.
The funeral for Lopez, who died on Monday, has not yet been scheduled because the family is waiting for the arrival of his daughters, who live in Spain and are going through the procedures required for traveling to Havana.
One of his fellow musicians in the Buena Vista Social Club, trumpet player Luis Manuel “Guajiro” Mirabal, told Efe that “for the group it’s an irreparable loss. He was a great musician, a great friend, his passing is felt very deeply.”
Born in Havana on Feb. 2, 1933, Lopez grew up in a family of musicians: his father, Orestes Lopez, and his uncle Israel “Cachao” Lopez gained fame as double-bassists, composers and instrumentalists.
Orlando studied with his dad, joined the orchestra of Arcaño y sus Maravillas (Arcaño and his Marvels), was a member of the Riverside jazz band in 1954 and in 1960 played in the National Symphony Orchestra.
In 1966 he performed with the Cuban Modern Music Orchestra and in 1996 was chosen for the Buena Vista Social Club with other talented musicians, some now deceased, such as singers Ibrahim Ferrer and Pio Leyva, singer-songwriter Compay Segundo and pianist Ruben Gonzalez. EFE

Louis Stewart, a jazz guitarist from Dublin, is making his first appearance in New York this week at Bechet’s, Third Avenue between 75th and 76th Streets, where he is playing in a quartet led by the drummer Bobby Rosengarden.
For many years, Mr. Stewart has been impressing American musicians who have heard him at Slattery’s in Dublin or at concerts and festivals in Europe.
When Benny Goodman toured Europe in 1970 with a big band, he was so taken with Mr. Stewart that he added him to the band as a guitar soloist despite the fact that the well-established guitarist, Bucky Pizzarelli, was also in the band.
Mr. Stewart, who has the staid and sober appearance of a prosperous greengrocer, seems to have his musical roots in be-bop. He leans toward material associated with Charlie Parker and he spins out single-note lines that flow with an unhurried grace, colored by sudden bright, lively chorded phrases. His up-tempo virtuosity is balanced by a laid-back approach to ballads, which catches the mood of the piece without sacrificing the rhythmic emphasis that keeps it moving.
At Bechet’s, Mr. Stewart is in the kind of fast company that might overwhelm a lesser talent. Both Derek Smith on piano and Steve Lespina on bass are visually as well as musically compelling - Mr. Smith taking rocketing, spider-fingered walks across the keyboard that build into dazzling solos and Mr. Lespina using body English to stretch and curve his line. Mr. Rosengarden’s drums are a strong foundation and, with his imaginative and often humorous approach, a decorative surface. John S. Wilson
